Kevin went on to establish his own studio and make his name working with a wide range of clients across many sectors including
- retail
- commercial
- fashion
- food
- manufacturing
- construction
- publishing
- public/government sector
as well as a number of artisan craftspeople who particularly valued his ability to make their own unique creations come alive in print.
Although much of his work has been rooted in the studio techniques he learned from his mentors in his days as a professional assistant, he also enjoys location and outdoor work. One of his favourite approaches to a commission is to take his studio skills and lighting techniques with him on location, using this approach to create interesting effects that make his subjects really stand out. To this end he has an extensive collection of lighting and other equipment enabling him to build a studio environment virtually anywhere, indoors or out.
Kevin now lives in North Devon with his partner Jo, 2 children, 1 cat, a few chickens, several frogs and an unknown number of fish. He travels widely for work and will happily discuss commissions and enquiries from any avenue, be it a publicly tendered contract or an individual one-off project.
He is also working on various personal projects, including a portrait series documenting rural life and work, and is always looking for new people and locations to incorporate into his work.
Originally from Glasgow, Kevin left home at 17 to travel the world and find fame and fortune. He didn't find either, but 3 years of living and working in the Middle East, Africa, Indonesia and Australia did kindle an abiding passion for photography which has shaped the course of his subsequent life and career.
Returning to the UK he first studied Documentary Photography at the London College of Printing, and then went on to complete an OND and HND in photography at City of Westminster College.
Like many established photographers, his real introduction to the profession and the foundation of most of his practical skills came from the following years spent as a freelance photographic assistant working with many of the top commercial and advertising photographers in London.
Through this apprenticeship he gained experience in the full spectrum of styles and techniques, shooting everything from cars to fashion and from food to celebrities. At this time most of this work was using traditional large format 10 x 8 and 5 x 4 film cameras, though now he works almost exclusively in digital.
